A case of arson has been opened at Hillcrest police station following a destructive fire that engulfed the residence of former Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube on Sunday.

The incident not only devastated the property but also resulted in significant damage to several vehicles and motorbikes parked at the site.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the inferno consumed the family home and vehicles, including two motorbikes and two quad bikes.

The fire was believed to have been sparked while Dube-Ncube’s vehicle was secured inside the garage. She was alerted to thick smoke emanating from the building moments later.

“The owner of the property parked her vehicle inside the garage, but was later alerted to smoke coming out of the garage.

"The suspects are unknown at this stage and the motive is being investigated,” Colonel Netshiunda stated and assured that the investigation is ongoing.

No injuries have been reported.

Sibusiso Dlamini, the Division Commander of the eThekwini Municipality Fire and Emergency Services unit, confirmed that while the devastation was extensive, the swift response of fire services mitigated further risks.

Noteworthy damage was also observed to sections of the servant's quarters, adding to the scope of the destruction, he confirmed.

Following the incident, the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal expressed its solidarity with Dube-Ncube and her family.

Party spokesperson Fanele Sibisi remarked, “In the spirit of uBuntu and revolutionary compassion, we call on all sectors of society, regardless of political affiliation, to demonstrate empathy and solidarity.

"No one should face such devastation alone. We trust that justice will prevail, and we will continue to monitor developments as investigations progress.”

Despite the tumultuous circumstances, Dube-Ncube has remained largely silent on the matter.

The former Premier, who governed KwaZulu-Natal from August 2022 until May 2024, was appointed deputy minister of Higher Education and Training by President Cyril Ramaphosa a day after fire engulfed her home.
