Sir David Attenborough turned 100 today, and the legendary broadcaster and environmental champion has received perhaps the most fitting birthday tribute imaginable: a newly identified species of wasp has been officially named in his honour.

While milestone birthdays are often marked with cake and gifts, celebrations tend to look a little different when the guest of honour is one of the world’s most beloved voices in natural history.

The naming of the insect is a tribute not only to Attenborough’s extraordinary career but also to the lasting impact he has had on generations of scientists and nature lovers around the globe.

To mark his centenary, scientists at the Natural History Museum in London announced the naming of Attenboroughnculus tau.

This tiny, brownish insect measures merely 3.5 millimetres in length and is native to the Patagonian lakes of Chile.

The naming of the wasp serves as a tribute not just to Attenborough's conservation work, but to his ability to inspire future scientists.

Dr Gavin R. Broad, the Principal Curator of Insects at the Natural History Museum, shared his personal connection to the broadcaster's legacy.

Speaking to the publication Rova, Dr Broad stated: “When I was far too young, I learnt about taxonomy from David Attenborough's 'Life on Earth' series and resolved to be a taxonomist. Amazingly, I ended up a taxonomist, so I have Sir David to thank for that”.

Dr Broad also hopes this new species will help change public perceptions of wasps.

“Everyone's classic idea of a wasp is the yellow and black friend of picnics. But that's just a tiny part of waspness. Most of the things that we call wasps are rather small, little things that parasitise other insects”, he told National Geographic.

As for the man of the hour, Sir David had originally hoped for a quiet celebration, but the global outpouring of love changed his plans.

In a recorded audio message, he expressed his deep appreciation, saying: “I've been completely overwhelmed by birthday greetings from pre-school groups to care home residents and countless individuals and families of all ages. I simply can't reply to each of you all separately, but I would like to thank you all most sincerely for your kind messages”.
