Billie Eilish is known for speaking her mind, and she did exactly that at the recent WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The 23-year-old artist, who won the Music Innovator Award on the night, used her acceptance speech to directly ask the world’s richest people to justify their immense wealth.
The “Birds of a Feather” singer spoke passionately about the state of the world, urging those with wealth to use their resources for good.
“We’re in a time right now where the world is really, really bad and really dark, and people need empathy and help more than, kind of, ever, especially in our country,” she said.
“I’d say if you have money, it would be great to use it for good things, maybe give it to some people that need it.”
She then delivered a challenge to the billionaires in attendance, saying, “Love you all, but there’s a few people in here that have a lot more money than me. If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but yeah, give your money away, shorties.”
In the audience sat multi-billionaire Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan.
Prior to her speech, it was announced that she is personally donating a significant $11.5 million from the proceeds of her "Hit Me Hard and Soft" tour.
This massive contribution will be dedicated to organisations and projects focused on vital efforts, including food equity, climate justice, reducing carbon pollution, and combating the climate crisis.
George Lucas, Hailey Bieber, Spike Lee and Chris Rock were just a few of the other famous people who attended the event.
