Author and social media commentator Khaya Dlanga has recently reacted to the killing of whistle-blower Marius van der Merwe, known as “Witness D” on X, writing: “Criminals are so brazen in this country.
"The way they just killed Witness D when the whole country is paying attention to the commission. It's people who are used to getting away with their criminality and expect no consequences, even for this act. The casual arrogance is chilling.”
Van der Merwe was shot and killed outside his home in Brakpan, on the East Rand of Gauteng, on Friday, December 5, weeks after testifying at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
His testimony revealed an alleged murder and a cover-up involving high-ranking officers in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD). He was killed as he stepped out of his car to open his gate, in view of his family.
During his testimony, Van der Merwe implicated a suspended EMPD deputy police chief in a murder cover-up from 2022, among other allegations. His assassination has sparked national outrage and raised concerns about the safety of witnesses and whistleblowers in the country.
Responses under Dlanga’s post reflected public alarm.
@MrMyagiEsq wrote: “That's nothing, going to court with illegal firearms, unregistered cars. South Africans are brazen!”
@Jan_0656 added: “It is also indicative of the level of impunity to act as their own ‘force.’ Hopefully, the truth will come out; the tentacles of these criminals are everywhere.”
@Jannie commented, “A real criminal state. It is actually sad how our country has deteriorated over the last 20 years.”
@cD wrote: “They have an elevated sense of self. I honestly question the impunity factor. What would make you think you are special and will be protected? I watch some appear in court and before commissions, and they have zero shame. The message they send is We are the law!”
