There’s an old playground rule everyone remembers: no backsies. Once you say it, it’s out there. Unfortunately for the internet, social media doesn’t exactly come with a “take it back” button, only apologies, explanations, and the occasional “never mind”.
So when Doja Cat jumped online to call out Timothée Chalamet for comments about ballet and opera, the moment spread faster than gossip in a WhatsApp group. But now? The singer is walking it all the way back.
In a new video, she essentially pulled a full “never mind”, admitting she might have spoken a little too soon.
Let’s rewind quickly. The drama started after Chalamet suggested that people don’t really care about ballet or opera anymore, a comment that didn’t sit well with some fans of the arts. Enter Cat, who stepped in like the self-appointed defender of high culture.
Except there was just one tiny detail. She later confessed she doesn’t actually know anything about ballet. Or opera. At all.
“I am going to come out and say that I know nothing about opera. I know nothing about ballet,” she said right at the start of the video, before clarifying that aside from some childhood dance experiences, she’s “in no way, shape, or form” a professional dancer.
In fact, the singer admitted she has never even attended a ballet performance or an opera show.
According to Cat, her original rant wasn’t really about defending the arts. It was about… well… the internet.
She explained that she deliberately jumped into the conversation because online outrage is basically social media currency. The controversy around Chalamet’s comment looked like the perfect opportunity to join the discourse and score a few viral points.
In her own words, she admitted she was “virtue signalling” and using the situation to connect with people and gain approval.
In simpler terms: she saw a trending topic and thought, “Why not?”
Cat even acknowledged that the move worked exactly as expected. Controversial opinions online tend to generate engagement - clicks, likes, shares, comments, the whole digital circus.
But after thinking about it, she realised she had essentially hopped on a bandwagon she knew nothing about.
“The truth is, I don’t know anything about opera. I don’t know anything about ballet,” she repeated, explaining that she simply wanted to feel like she was part of something bigger, and maybe get a few pats on the back from the comment section.
By the end of the video, she summed up the situation in the most relatable way possible: sometimes you say something, then later your brain catches up and goes, “Actually… never mind.”
Which, in this case, might be the most honest plot twist the internet has seen all week.
