South African musician and comedian Bouwer Bosch has joined the chorus of reactions after the dramatic news involving Mel Viljoen and her husband, Peet Viljoen, sent social media into a frenzy.
The couple, known from "The Real Housewives of Pretoria", recently made headlines after being arrested in the United States in connection with a retail theft investigation, and Bosch had a few thoughts about the situation.
“The irony of Peet and Mel being arrested in America for being thieves is ridiculous! You can’t script this,” Bosch said in a video reacting to the news.
He then pointed to the couple’s past social media behaviour, which has previously stirred controversy.
“The amount of times that they went live on their TikTok and Instagram saying ‘black people are criminals’, ‘black people steal’… they made such racist comments about black people and criminals in South Africa, and now they get caught for stealing?
"I mean, are you kidding me? It’s insane!”
Bosch added that the situation proves a bigger point that many people already know, but some still refuse to admit.
“It just shows being a criminal is all about character, not skin colour,” he added.
According to reports from the United States, Mel and Peet Viljoen were arrested in Boca Raton, Florida, earlier this week after authorities linked them to a grocery store theft investigation.
Police allege the pair used a tactic known as “ticket switching”, where cheaper barcodes are scanned for expensive items. Investigators claim the scheme allowed them to walk out with groceries worth more than $5,000 (around R90,000) without properly paying for them.
