From music to the Viennese New Year: top events in Joburg this weekend

Big Top Rock

Get a rocking start to your 2026 with this music and circus spectacular.

Big Top Rock is a full-throttle rock and roll production which features a high-voltage fusion of iconic anthems, jaw-dropping aerial artistry, and an electric atmosphere.

The legendary Big Top Ringmaster will entertain the crowd with hits from icons such as Elvis Presley, Pink, Michael Jackson, Roxette and Queen. There will also be other stage performances.

Where: The Barnyard Theatre at Emperors Palace.

When: Runs until February 1, with shows at 2pm and 7pm.

Viennese New Year with Richard Cock

Celebrate the Viennese New Year with The Phoenix Orchestra, under the spirited direction of Maestro Richard Cock.

This event will include Viennese waltzes, lively polkas, and timeless melodies by the Strauss family and their contemporaries.

Soprano and tenor soloists will also take to the stage with their beloved operetta arias and duets.

Where: The Linder Auditorium at Wits University.

When: Sunday, January 25, from 3pm.

Sunday Society Picnic

Enjoy picnic season with an elevated garden experience where chic fashion meets gourmet indulgence.

Set against the backdrop of The Maslow’s lawns, attendees can enjoy live entertainment, a picnic basket for two, as well as a hot food selection and a glass of Graham Beck champagne on arrival. 

This weekend's theme is "Sparkle in the Sun", so come dressed in your sequins and metallics and shine bright with radiant tones and shimmering details.
