Tshwane metro police officers had their hands full on Monday trying to arrest a woman allegedly driving drunk.
While patrolling the N4, they noticed a car swerving dangerously from lane to lane coming through the Diamond View Toll Plaza from Mpumalanga and tried to stop it. The driver of the car, a 36 year-old woman, didn’t heed their call to stop and continued driving.
Tshwane metro police spokesman Console Tleane said officers followed the car.
“After failing to stop initially, the officers finally managed to stop her on Garsfontein Road after she had taken the Hans Strijdom off-ramp from the N4,” said Tleane.
When the officers spoke to her they suspected that she was drunk. They took her to the Brooklyn police station where she was going to be charged for driving under the influence of alcohol. Tleane said the woman would be taken to the district surgeon for a blood test.
Meanwhile, a taxi driver has been arrested for offering a metro police officer a “cooldrink” (bribe).
The 30-year-old taxi driver was stopped on the N1 near Lynnwood. Police saw the front number plate of the vehicle was missing.
“Even before the officer could issue a fine, the driver tried to give the officer a R100 note, saying the officer could buy a cooldrink,” said Tleane.
The driver was immediately arrested for trying to bribe a police officer and taken to the Garsfontein police station on a charge of bribery.
Tleane warned motorists not to try to bribe officers as such acts would definitely lead to arrest and prosecution.
While patrolling the freeways the metro police also identified a possible stolen vehicle.
They arrested a suspect at the Boschkop off-ramp of the N4.
