Fifty-one people have graduated from a three-month vocational training programme funded by Sub-council 12.
The trainees came from various wards under the sub-council and were selected from its jobseeker database.
The training was done by Mizpah Educare, a non-profit organisation, from September to December last year, and the trainees received certificates of completion at a graduation ceremony in December.
Fifteen completed basic hair, nail and beauty training, ten did basic web-development and 26 did accredited peace-officer training.
According to Anthea Arendse, principal of Mizpah Educare, the hair, nail and beauty graduates have been employed at local salons and all received start-up kits to start their own home-businesses.
“The start-up kits included shampoos, conditioners, hair dryers and flat irons so that they can start businesses from home to alleviate poverty in the community and grow and uplift the local economy. They are now self-sufficient and can provide for their own families,” she said.
Ms Arendse said the web development and peace officer graduates could now apply for job opportunities with confidence.
“Many of them now have access to more job opportunities. The peace officer graduates, for example, can apply for jobs in law enforcement, traffic and other government departments, as they have received accredited training.
“During the December holidays, some of the peace officer graduates also volunteered their services at local neighbourhood watches and businesses in their wards.”
