The Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD) hosted two workshops focused on health and nutrition at the Ocean View Library earlier this week as part of its Family Outreach Programme.
The centre’s family outreach worker Lisa Jurgens said the workshops, which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 25 and 26, were part of the centre’s ongoing efforts at supporting parents and caregivers in disadvantaged communities.
In September last year, the Echo reported that the Claremont-based centre, which opened in 1994, provides training, support, and advice to improve the education of children from disadvantaged communities. The outreach programme had been piloted in Ocean View and Red Hill, where CECD staff conducted home visits to assess the needs of children not enrolled in preschools (“Workshop promotes early learning in Ocean View,” Echo, September 17, 2024).

Tuesday's workshop was led by CECD fieldworker and trainer Kirsty Johnson, who highlighted the importance of a balanced diet during pregnancy and early childhood.
She also provided guidance on how harmful substances could negatively impact an unborn child and demonstrated the use of a food pyramid to help parents and caregivers plan nutritious meals for themselves and their children.

On Wednesday, Ms Jurgens said, she led an exercise class for parents and caregivers, where she shared her personal fitness journey and provided practical advice for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Ms Jurgens said the latest workshops reaffirm the CECD’s commitment to empowering parents and caregivers with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure a healthier future for young children in Ocean View.
