Ellen Davids of Steenberg celebrated her 95th birthday at the Aldersgate Methodist Church Hall, in Steenberg, on March 22.
Chervonne Visser, Ms Davids’ granddaughter, said her granny loved cooking and baking for her family and friends.
During her working days she was employed at the Broom Factory in Salt River, Table Mountain restaurant as a cook, St James Hotel as a housekeeper, The Constantia Nek as a cook and housekeeper to the owner's house on the premises, and The Bayview Hotel in Muizenberg.
"So she was always on her feet and always in the kitchen."
Ms Visser said not only did she love being in the kitchen, but she also loved walking and lang arm dancing in her younger days and still does.
While still fit, Ms Davids complains daily of how painful her legs are and she also has Alzheimer's disease.
Born and raised in Salt River, Ms Davids has been a church-going woman. “She has attended the Blessed Hope Full Gospel Church in Cradock Road in Steenberg for the past 70 years.”
Ms Davids' motto for her children was to always have respect and remember the goodness of God. "She educated her grandchildren about the importance of church and Sunday school. She loves singing and her favourite song is Jesus is a wonderful Saviour,” said Ms Visser.
