As the National Cupcake Day approaches, the non-profit organisation behind the childhood cancer awareness and fundraising initiative has announced an encouraging growth in the number of malls that have signed up for this year’s event on September 27.

In the Tshwane region the list of malls taking part grew from six to eight, while 24 have joined in Johannesburg compared to last year’s total of 21.

The organisers said last year the event brought together 2,000 volunteer bakers and raised R2.3 million for children fighting cancer.

Cupcakes of Hope (CoH) founder Sandy Cipriano proudly said: “We do have the best volunteers in the world!”

10,000 families assisted so far

Since their launch in 2012, CoH has supported over 10,000 families. Just last year, they fulfilled 2,568 financial support requests, delivered 3,022 activity care bags to over 21 paediatric oncology wards, and celebrated 111 patient birthdays.

“Oncologists, hospitals, social workers and hospices all contact Cupcakes of Hope with requests to assist,” said Cipriano.

The “Cupcake Angels” — volunteer bakers from across the country — are the foundation that supports “everything” that is done via CoH. They make and sell cupcakes to raise funds for the initiative during the national event as well as during other smaller initiatives.

“Every year, countless bakers and volunteers pour their hearts, time, and ingredients into this cause,” says Lori-Anne Hill, fundraising coordinator for CoH.

“Last year, we had over 800 bakers registered in the Vaal, Johannesburg and Pretoria areas, and their dedication contributed significantly to the total funds raised. We’re deeply grateful to every person who chooses to bake it forward — their kindness truly makes a difference.”
