The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has vowed to intensify its road safety operations across the city by enforcing municipal by-laws as the festive holidays draw to a close.

TMPD spokesperson Colonel Isaac Mahamba said intensive operations have yielded multiple arrests for drunk driving, cable theft, and other offences, with several vehicles impounded for operating without licenses.

“With an increase in traffic, the TMPD has put in place stringent measures to combat reckless driving and promote safe driving practices to ensure a safe journey for all. The TMPD officers will be stationed at key points along the highways to monitor traffic flow, enforce road traffic laws, and respond to any emergencies that may arise,” he said.

He said reckless driving is a major concern during peak travel times, as motorists may be in a rush to reach their destinations.

“There will be no tolerance for speeding, drunk driving, or any other dangerous behaviours that could result in accidents,” he said.

Mahamba advised motorists to be cautious as they navigate through the rainy season, road conditions may be more treacherous than usual.

“Wet roads can reduce traction and increase the risk of skidding or hydroplaning. Motorists are advised to drive at a safe speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid sudden manoeuvres that could lead to loss of control,” he said.

He added that it is crucial for motorists to take responsibility for their own safety by conducting pre-trip inspections on their vehicles to ensure that they are in good working condition.

“Also, checking tire pressure, brakes, lights, and other essential components can help prevent breakdowns and accidents on the road,” he said.

He reported that the TMPD conducted highly intensive operations around all areas of Tshwane to ensure the safety and compliance of all vehicles operating on the public road and prevent movements and entering of illegal goods in the city.

“TMPD public transport unit conducted an operation at Simon Vermoeten and Alvyn Street in Mamelodi, the members impounded motor vehicles operating illegally for reward without prescribed operating licences and issued section 56 and AARTO 1 infringement notices,” he said.

Acting on a tip-off, the TMPD's cable theft unit swooped on a scene in First Avenue, foiling an attempt to damage critical infrastructure. Two suspects were arrested at the scene.

Mahamba said the metro police conducted numerous drunk driving operations across the city, with officials emphasising a zero-tolerance approach to ensure road safety.

In a targeted operation on Molefe Makinta Road, the metro police's Region 1 sector 1 team arrested nine individuals for drunk driving, with five more charged with driving under the influence and four for public drinking.

The operation also saw AARTO infringement notices issued to motorists breaking traffic laws, officials vowing to maintain high-visibility policing.

Mahamba said: “Region 2 sector 2 heightened the visibility and enforcement of the law for public road users by conducting an impressive visible operation and side point check. Members inspected and searched 355 vehicles, issued 14 AARTO (notices) and effected arrest for driving under the influence of intoxicating substances.”

He praised the TMPD members for exceptional work in prioritising community safety during festive holidays.

He stated the metro police’s commitment to law enforcement remains unwavering despite the festive holidays coming to an end.

"Nothing has changed, we're more resilient in enforcing the law," he said.
