Jeffrey Epstein is "almost certainly not dead" and may have been working for an intelligence agency to blackmail powerful people.

That was the bizarre claim made by Errol Musk after newly released Epstein files showed his sons, Tesla owner and billionaire Elon, and Kimbal, rubbed shoulders with the disgraced financier more than a decade ago.

Epstein is almost certainly not dead," SA-born Musk, who lives in Langebaan, told IOL at the weekend.

"That was obvious from day one to anyone with half a brain."

Epstein was a convicted sex offender and accused paedophile who was at the centre of one of the biggest sex trafficking scandals in the US.

In July 2019, he was arrested on federal charges of sex trafficking underage girls.

The 66-year-old was accused of abusing dozens of minors at his homes in New York and Florida, as well as at his private island, Little St James, in the US Virgin Islands.

While awaiting trial in a New York jail in August that year, he was found dead in his cell.

At the time, US authorities ruled his death a suicide.

His longtime associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, was later convicted in 2021 of helping him recruit and abuse underage girls.

In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida to state charges of procuring a minor for prostitution and soliciting prostitution.

He served about 13 months in jail under a controversial plea deal.

The US justice department released the Epstein files in late December, under the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

These initial files were followed by additional waves of material, culminating in a major release of over three million pages.

Dozens of the world's richest individuals were named in the files, including Bill Gates and Prince Andrew and even ex-SA president Jacob Zuma.

Daily Maverick reported about Zuma's alleged private dinner with the billionaire.

As previously reported by IOL, a Jeffreys Bay couple, Cathy and Miles Alexander, who worked for Epstein for almost a decade, were also mentioned.

Musk said he believed there had been more to the Epstein case than the public had been told.

"It appears Epstein was working for an intelligence agency, not necessarily a country's intelligence agency, aiming to get compromising information about important people, who could then be blackmailed," he said.

When asked which agency he believed could be involved, he said: "The rumours are the Mossad."

Mossad is Israel's intelligence and counter-terrorism agency.

There was no official evidence that Epstein had worked for an intelligence agency or that he was still alive.

The latest release in the Epstein files included emails and social exchanges from 2012 and 2013.

It showed that there had been contact between Epstein, and Elon and Kimbal.

Being named in the files does not mean a person has been accused of a crime.

Errol defended his sons and said what he had seen in the documents did not show "illegal" conduct.

"What I have seen is women older than 16, more like 20, but possibly younger, with these various men, agreeing with big smiles to be with these men," he said.

"There is nothing illegal about that."

He added: "If the men were married, then it could cause them to be sued for divorce and perhaps some embarrassment in the eyes of the public. Nothing else."

He described the women as "willing participants".

"These women were adult willing participants.

"He probably paid them well and promised all sorts of things. This happens everywhere."

Musk said his greater concern had been reports about missing children.

"What is of concern is the missing children and the persistent rumours of child murder to extract the child's adrenal fluid for anti-aging concoctions. This is dead serious.

"Hundreds of thousands of children missing according to reports."

Musk also bizarrely referenced actress Sandra Bullock while discussing rumours about so-called anti-ageing treatments.

He referred to an interview between Bullock and ex-TV host Ellen DeGeneres, in which Bullock joked that her anti-ageing cream was made from the skins of small children “but very far away”.

He then linked that comment to online claims about "child adrenal fluid" being used in anti-ageing concoctions, suggesting this could be connected to material in "unreleased Epstein files".

He also made a separate remark about Hillary Clinton, calling her "a very evil person".

There was no verified evidence in court records supporting claims about so-called "adrenal fluid" harvesting, and authorities did not confirm such allegations.

Asked directly whether he believed any of the girls were underage, he said that from what he had seen they appeared older.

When asked if Kimbal was a womaniser, he replied: "No, Kimbal is a married man of 10 years with four children."

He confirmed that Kimbal had not spoken to him about the files.

On family communication and privacy, Musk said: "We communicate via Signal messaging. Very secure."

Similar to WhatsApp, Signal is an encrypted messaging app that allows users to send messages and make calls securely, with conversations protected from outside access.

He said he had been hacked repeatedly and now avoided putting important matters in messages or discussing them over the phone.

The unsealed documents showed that Kimbal had social contact with Epstein and his associates in 2012 and 2013.

On September 12, 2012, Kimbal emailed venture capitalist Boris Nikolic inviting Epstein to an event: "Fun time last night! Let Jeffrey and his friends know they are invited tomorrow night. Four Seasons. 7pm. Black tie. Arrive no later than 8pm. Can you send me and Karla the names for the guest list? See you tomorrow! K." (sic)

Nikolic confirmed Epstein would attend.

In another exchange, Nikolic wrote: "Just FYI; you better be nice to Jenn. Jeffrey goes crazy when someone mistreats his girls/friends. So better be very nice to her. And Jeffrey and I better have a special treatment at your ceremony. Great hanging out with you. See you very soon."

Kimbal replied: "Message received wide and clear. Seriously, I am very happy with my time so far with Jennifer."

The emails also showed discussions about Halloween plans, including a suggestion from Nikolic: "Perhaps three of us could do something together, for example, Jeffrey could be Holy Spirit (wise man), I would go as baby Jesus, and you Kimbal could go as Virgin Mary ;)"

In early 2013, Kimbal informed Epstein that his marriage had ended.

"I'm now divorced! Free to live my life. Talking to [redacted] again. How're you doing?"

Other emails showed personal exchanges about relationships and stress.

In one message, Kimbal wrote: "I don't think I'm being very fair to you as well and it is weighing me down. I want to have you well and being time for you but at the end of each day I just weigh and pass out. And I don't sleep. It's a wonderful routine. :)"

He added: "Would you be up for going back a step to just dating? We would see each other on weekends when we can and focus it on fun stuff. Bringing you into my drama can't be fun for you and isn't healthy for me either."

There was no evidence that Kimbal had been charged with any crime in connection with Epstein.

The files also included emails between Elon and Epstein.

The SpaceX owner publicly denied ever visiting Epstein's private island, Little St James in the US Virgin Islands.

On December 13, 2013, Musk wrote: "I will be in the BVI/St Bart's area over the holidays. Is there a good time to visit?"

Epstein replied: "any day 1st - 8th. play it by ear if you want. always space for you." (sic)

In November 2012, Musk responded to a question about helicopter transport to the island: “Probably just Talulah and me. What day/night will be the wildest party on your island?”

On Christmas Day 2012, Musk wrote: "Do you have any parties planned? I've been working to the edge of sanity this year and so, once my kids head home after Christmas, I really want to hit the party scene in St Barts or elsewhere and let loose.

"The invitation is much appreciated, but a peaceful island experience is the opposite of what I’m looking for."

Epstein replied: "Understood, I will see you on st Barth, the ratio on my island might make Talilah uncomfortable.” In another exchange, Epstein wrote: “do you think I'm r*******? just kidding, there is no one over 25 and all very cute." (sic)

There was no evidence in the released documents confirming that Elon had travelled to the island.

Musk was embroiled in his own scandal in 2025 when The New York Times reported multiple claims of abuse spanning more than 30 years. The alleged victims include five of Musk's children and stepchildren.

He denied the allegations, dismissing them as "nonsense".
