Tshwane MMC for Corporate and Shared Services Kholofelo Morodi, who was put on precautionary suspension last week after allegations emerged from the Madlanga Commission implicating her in tender irregularities, has been dismissed from the Mayoral Committee.
Her party, ActionSA, welcomed the action taken by Moya to remove Morodi with immediate effect in a statement released on Friday.
“Following serious allegations implicating Morodi, within a matter of hours Dr Moya had suspended her as an MMC, and ActionSA’s Provincial Executive Committee had followed suit pending a disciplinary investigation. Further to Dr Moya’s termination of Morodi today, ActionSA’s Gauteng PEC will consider the question of her membership at a meeting this evening.
“This kind of action, from both our Mayor in the City of Tshwane and our party structures within a single week, demonstrates that ActionSA is committed to fighting corruption and wrongdoing through its actions, and not merely its words,” the party said.
ActionSA apologised “unreservedly” to Tshwane residents for what it described as “an error of judgement”, stating that “there was no way of knowing Morodi’s intentions” when she was put in the post.
The mayor came under pressure from opposition parties this week to act more decisively following the Madlanga Commission revelations implicating Morodi and other Tshwane leaders. In particular, she was accused of being “scared” to act against Deputy Mayor Eugene "Bonzo" Modise after a company linked to him was flagged in the commission.
Responding to the accusations on Thursday, Moya said the Tshwane Council was dealing with the Modise matter and had instituted a forensic investigation.
"We are not in this coalition to serve our personal interest. We are not in this coalition to enrich ourselves. And, therefore, there is no position of coalition that I represent that (says) some of us are untouchable because we are scared the coalition will collapse."
Modise is an ANC appointee linked to Triotic Protection Services, which has an existing municipal contract. Triotic was among the security companies mentioned during recent testimony by Gauteng Organised Crime Unit officer Sergeant Fannie Nkosi at the commission.
Modise’s defence against accusations of improperly benefitting from a company doing business with the council he is part of is that he resigned from Triotic in 2023 upon becoming a councillor. However, the company is reportedly owned by his mother, Nelly Modise, and directed by Neo Mafodi, who is allegedly the mother of his child.
On the DA’s accusations of Moya’s alleged reluctance to act against Modise, the party said: “ActionSA takes note of an opposition that appears to be becoming more and more desperate in their spasms of irrelevance. A concerted misinformation campaign has attempted to malign Dr Moya’s leadership based on the revelations of the Madlanga Commission. It has now been revealed that the tenders in question were all awarded under the tenure of DA Mayors, and not Dr Moya.”
