City of Tshwane’s Emergency Services Department has rescued a man in his 30s who was trapped in his vehicle following a horrific crash.

The patient, a disabled man, was treated for serious injuries and transported by private ambulance service to Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa.

Spokesperson for the Tshwane Emergency Services Department, Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni, said two other patients from two trucks, a driver and a passenger, were also treated and transported by another private ambulance service to Netcare Akasia Hospital.

The fourth patient sustained no injuries.

“The City of Tshwane Emergency Services Department responded to a multiple vehicle crash incident that involved two heavy-duty trucks and a light motor vehicle, in Akasia, north of Pretoria, on the morning of Monday, 7 July 2025,” said Mnguni.

“While Tshwane firefighters were driving towards Wonderboom in the district commander’s unit, at about 9:33am, they came across an accident scene at the intersection of Rosslyn Road (R566) and Willem Cruywagen Street. They immediately reported the incident to the Emergency Communication Centre, calling for backup, and began with incident scene management," said Mnguni.

On assessment of the scene, the firefighters found a light motor vehicle, a black sedan, that was still smouldering from the impact of the collision, with the driver, who seemed trapped, still inside.

"Crews from private emergency medical services soon arrived and assisted the firefighters with the rescue. They performed an emergency extrication procedure and rescued the driver from the wreckage as there was an imminent danger and threat of the car catching fire," he said.

A team from the Tshwane Metro Police Department and a fire engine from GaRankuwa Fire Station also arrived on the scene and worked together with private tow truck services, ensuring that the road is safe for use by motorists after this incident.

The scene was cleared after midday.

“Motorists and all road users are encouraged to be cautious on the road to prevent similar incidents from occurring,” said Mnguni.
