The case against accused human trafficker David Nweneshi has been postponed at the Cape Town Magistrate's Court for an interpreter before he furthers his bail application.
The matter was on the court roll today (Tuesday) for bail information, but has been postponed to January 8 for an interpreter. He remains in custody.
Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani confirmed that Nweneshi was arrested and faces charges of Contravention of the Immigration Act and Trafficking in persons after he made his first court appearance on December 29, 2025.
On December 28, Hani said the 23-year-old Nweneshi was initially arrested on December 23 for an immigration violation.
Subsequently, he faced an additional charge of trafficking in persons.
“These are two distinct crimes under the law. The suspect will face the full justice process for both offences. It is reported that on 23 December 2025, members of the Hawks Economic Protected Resources (EPR) conducted a search and seizure operation to identify possible victims of trafficking in persons at a house in Milnerton.
“Upon searching, one victim was identified, and thereafter, the alleged trafficker was also identified and was instantly interviewed. During the interview, it was discovered that he is illegally in the country. He was immediately arrested under the Immigration Act.”
Hani said as the investigation progressed, the victim confirmed that “indeed the suspect arrested under the Immigration Act was the trafficker, which led to his arrest”.
