Three scholars were injured on Tuesday morning when a scholar transport vehicle was involved in a crash with a light motor vehicle in Germiston.

The crash occurred along Kingfisher Avenue in Elspark and involved a Toyota Quantum scholar transporter and a Volkswagen sedan.

On Monday, IOL reported that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi expressed shock and sadness following a horrific crash in which 12 learners were killed in the private scholar transport incident in Vanderbijlpark, in the Vaal.

The learners from different primary and secondary schools were travelling in a Toyota Quantum on Monday morning when the vehicle collided with a truck.

On Tuesday, the City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) said emergency services were alerted at about 7.31 am, prompting a response from fire and rescue teams from the Wadeville and Vosloorus fire stations. Each team was supported by six firefighters who were deployed to render emergency assistance at the scene.

DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said the scholar transporter was carrying nine learners from different schools around the city at the time of the crash. Three scholars sustained minor injuries, while six others, including the driver, escaped unharmed. The driver of the VW sedan was also not injured.

Rescue teams reported that no occupants were trapped in either vehicle on arrival. The three injured scholars were transported by a private ambulance to a nearby medical facility for further medical attention.

Traffic flow along Kingfisher Avenue was temporarily affected while emergency operations were underway.

City of Ekurhuleni traffic officials were on the scene and conducted the necessary crash investigations after the incident was handed over by emergency responders.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Emergency services have urged residents to contact the city’s emergency call centre on 011 458 0911 in the event of any life-threatening emergencies.
