A domestic violence incident has sent shockwaves through the Bonteheuwel community on Tuesday, February 3, after a woman was stabbed to death in her home.

The woman, who is believed to be well-known in the community, was stabbed multiple times and sustained stab wounds to her head just after 3pm.

Bonteheuwel Ward Councillor, Angus McKenzie, expressed his anger at this violent murder.

“The suspect is her husband, who is currently on the run. What I can assure the community is this: every single law enforcement and SAPS officer in the Bonteheuwel area is actively on the lookout for him. There will be no hiding. He will be found, arrested, and charged. Let me be absolutely clear, gender-based violence has no place in Bonteheuwel. It will never be normalised, excused, or tolerated in our community. Not today. Not ever,” McKenzie said.

The victim, who was known to McKenzie, has been described as present, committed, and deeply passionate about her community.

“And yet, despite knowing her, despite working alongside her, I did not know the extent of the abuse, the assault, the pain, and the trauma she endured daily at the hands of the man who was meant to protect her, her husband. I will be at the forefront of ensuring that when the perpetrator of this horrendous crime is brought before the courts, bail is never, ever an option. Justice must be firm, swift, and uncompromising,” McKenzie said.

He advised the perpetrator to hand himself over to the authorities.

“Her murder must serve as a clarion call to every woman: Your smile, your strength, your joy, and your passion should never be used to mask pain, fear, or trauma inflicted by your own partner. You are not weak for speaking. You are not alone in asking for help. And your life is worth more than silence,” McKenzie said.

The Western Cape police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk, confirmed the incident.

“Circumstances surrounding a stabbing incident on Tuesday, at about 3.15pm at a premises in  Assegaai Avenue in Bonteheuwel, in which an adult female was stabbed and fatally injured, are under investigation. The victim sustained stab wounds to the head and the back of her shoulder. Bishop Lavis police registered a murder case for investigation,” he said.

Van Wyk said the woman was declared dead on arrival at the local hospital.

“According to reports, the members received a complaint of a person who was stabbed and declared deceased at a local hospital. On their arrival, they were shown the body of the deceased, who was declared dead on arrival. The motive for this stabbing incident has yet to be determined,” he said.

No arrests have been made, and police urged anyone with information to come forward.

“Anyone with information about this fatal incident can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously,” van Wyk added.
