Former Public Enterprises minister, Dr Malusi Gigaba, is expected to appear in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Thursday in a corruption case arising from Transnet’s locomotive procurement programme.
The case is being prosecuted by the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).
In a statement issued on 30 January 2026, IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame confirmed that the matter involving Gigaba and four former Transnet executives was postponed to 19 February 2026 for enrolment and hearing in the High Court.
Gigaba is charged alongside former Transnet Group chief executive Brian Molefe, former group chief financial officer Anoj Singh, former chief executive Siyabonga Gama and former chief procurement officer Thamsanqa Jiyane.
According to the indictments served on the accused, the charges relate to the period during which Transnet embarked on a process to acquire locomotives to expand and modernise South Africa’s rail infrastructure.
Prosecutors allege that tender processes were flouted and three contracts were irregularly awarded for the supply of 95, 100 and 1,064 locomotives under separate agreements, resulting in losses amounting to billions of rands for Transnet.
Gigaba faces a corruption charge linked to those contracts. He denies the charge and has indicated that he will contest the allegations in court.
