A woman and her lover have been handed life sentences after they were found guilty of plotting and hiring a hitman to kill the woman's 51-year-old husband.

According to police, Nokuzola Nxilolo and Mzamo Ciko were involved in a romantic relationship.

In 2017, the pair conspired to kill Nxilolo's husband, Sindezama Nxilolo, a traffic officer at the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality.

"The victim was seen as an obstacle to their relationship, which led to the hiring of a hitman from Cape Town. On the night of the incident, the hitman was taken to the victim’s home by Ciko, where he shot the victim seven times at close range before fleeing the scene," police said in a statement.

The hitman, Lungile Ntungwana, was arrested that same year and convicted. He was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment and later turned state's witness against Nxilolo and Ciko.

Nxilolo and Ciko were tracked to Khayelitsha, Cape Town, in 2022, and were arrested.

The pair was sentenced on two counts: murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The pair received five years’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit murder and life imprisonment for murder.

Acting Joe Gqabi District Commissioner, Colonel Zingisa Manqoyi, has praised the investigation team, including Captain Modise (retired), Warrant Officer Thembekile Mlindazwe, Warrant Officer Sinethemba Mtshawu, and Sergeant Buyelwa Tindleni, whose tireless efforts and coordination ensured a breakthrough in the case.
