A 55-year-old South African Police Service (SAPS) Colonel appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he was officially charged with the rape and sexual assault of a female colleague.
The accused, a high-ranking member of the Western Cape Protection and Security Services (PSS), was granted R5,000 bail after the State did not oppose his release.
The arrest was executed by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), the watchdog responsible for investigating police misconduct and internal abuse. This case adds to the growing number of sexual offense charges involving law enforcement officers across the Western Cape justice system.
The Colonel was arrested on Tuesday evening following allegations that he sexually assaulted and raped his 44-year-old female subordinate in May 2025.
The Western Cape spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Eric Ntabazalila, explained that the Colonel cannot be named at this stage as he has not yet entered a plea.
“The court set bail at R5,000 with conditions that the accused must not make contact with the victim/complainant directly or indirectly,” Ntabazalila said.
The matter has been postponed until May 27 for further investigation.
Ipid spokesperson Lizzy Suping provided broader context on the scale of such investigations. As of the end of March 2026, the unit has recorded 116 rape cases involving police.
“The Eastern Cape registered the highest number with 22 cases, followed by Gauteng and the Western Cape with 21 cases each. To date, 65 cases have been concluded and referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for a decision,” Suping said.
She added that criminal convictions for such offenses by the end of March 2026 have resulted in sentences ranging from eight to 25 years of direct imprisonment.
