Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane says only 5,464 learners remain unplaced in the 2026 online admissions process for Grade 1 and Grade 8, marking continued progress in learner placements across the province.
Departmental spokesperson Steve Mabona said the figure reflects sustained improvements in the system.
“As of Monday, 22 December 2025, the GDE Online Admissions system recorded a total of 5,464 unplaced Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners, comprising 1,478 Grade 1 learners and 3,986 Grade 8 learners,” Mabona said in a statement issued on Monday.
He said the department continues to release placement and transfer offers daily through the online admissions system, with targeted interventions in high-pressure areas to ensure that all remaining learners are placed as efficiently and fairly as possible.
The system has also recorded 7,118 late applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 for the 2026 academic year.
Mabona said all late applications are being actively processed in line with available school capacity.
Meanwhile, Chiloane reminded parents and guardians that the 2026 online admissions system remains open for late applications, particularly for those who did not apply during the main application period or who have incomplete applications.
He urged parents and guardians to apply online.
Chiloane said during the late application period, only schools with available space will appear on the system.
Applicants may select one school only, and once selected, the learner will be finally placed for the 2026 academic year, he said.
“Placements made during this period cannot be declined, and no objections or appeals will be permitted thereafter,” Chiloane said.
The department further confirmed that 6,855 placement appeals have been lodged as part of the 2026 admissions process, with 73% already adjudicated.
“The appeals process is at an advanced stage, and outcomes are being communicated to parents and guardians as finalisation progresses. Appeal outcomes are final,” Mabona said.
Chiloane welcomed the progress made so far and again urged parents and guardians to exercise patience and cooperation as the department works to ensure that every Grade 1 and Grade 8 learner is placed for the 2026 academic year, in line with regulated admissions criteria and available capacity.
