In an interesting twist for a party long dogged by allegations of corruption, the African National Congress (ANC) in Tshwane says it is ready to become a whistleblower against corruption in the city, including its municipal deployees.

In a media briefing on Tuesday, the party called for the immediate suspension of Tshwane CFO Gareth Mnisi, accusing him of maladministration and incompetence.

ANC regional secretary George Matjila said the party refuses to remain “the face of corruption” while officials implicated in wrongdoing operate behind the scenes.

“The corruption that has been happening is done by officials who are known,” Matjila said. “It is time that we, as the ANC, hold the bull by its horns and expose corruption.”

Matjila’s remarks follow discussions at the Gauteng Provincial Task Team (PTT) Lekgotla, where concerns were raised about officials whose alleged misconduct, he said, has damaged the credibility of political organisations.

“For too long, people say the ANC is corrupt,” Matjila said.

“But those whose hands are found in the cookie jar are not exposed. We are taking a firm position; we will deal with them internally, but we will also expose them publicly so communities know action is being taken.”

He stressed that corruption should not be weaponised as a partisan attack.

The ANC is in a coalition government with ActionSA and EFF, and many officials currently in senior positions were not appointed by the party, he said.

“We found many of these people here,” Matjila added, noting, “as and when they do wrong things, we are going to expose them. This is only the starting point.”

The call for Mnisi’s suspension places pressure on the city’s administration and coalition partners to respond decisively.

IOL reached out to the office of the mayor for a right of reply, but it was referred to the city officials.

Matjila said the party will have a meeting with the partners to find a way forward.

The ANC has faced years of allegations linked to graft and governance failures nationally.

Now, the ANC in Tshwane says it is ready to name culprits.
