Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) chief, Commissioner Yolande Faro, has vowed to root out corruption within her ranks, declaring an end to inaction and empty rhetoric as claims of financial misconduct and oversight failures grip her department.

Concluding her testimony on Wednesday, Faro struck a resolute tone, promising accountability and reform in a department rocked by claims of irregular spending, weak oversight, and procedural breaches.

“I don’t want this to be a talk show,” she said firmly. “I will report on the progress we make, even beyond this process.”

Her remarks followed pointed questioning that exposed critical blind spots in TMPD leadership, including her own.

Faro acknowledged that key issues, from alleged siphoning of funds to questionable tender awards, had unfolded without her knowledge, prompting sharp concern about internal controls.

“I was shocked and dismayed,” she admitted, responding to revelations of possible financial abuse involving millions of rand.

Under scrutiny, Faro conceded that mandatory vetting of senior officials had been neglected, a lapse she described as a serious breach.

“This is a mandatory requirement that has been overlooked,” she said, attributing the failure partly to delays in a cumbersome security clearance process.

Several top officials, she confirmed, still lack the required clearances.

Faro also distanced herself from controversial decisions taken by subordinates, repeatedly stating she had not been aware of irregular approvals, including the deployment and payment of ad-hoc services outside formal procurement channels.

Yet she insisted corrective action is already underway.

Faro said she acted swiftly to halt “unauthorised irregularities” and is now focused on restoring integrity and public trust.

She emphasised that she will work on cleaning up the corruption and misconduct allegations in the TMPD so that people can have confidence and trust in the police.
