The eight-month-old conjoined Tanzanian twins Esther and Stella Alphonce, who were separated at the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town on July 12, were "doing very well", the hospital said on Friday.
"The neurosurgeon Professor Jonathan Peter who operated on the twins to separate their spinal cord is very happy," said hospital spokesperson Diana Ross.
"Professor Heinz Rode who led the team is also very satisfied with their progress."
Ross said the response of the community had been tremendous.
"We had many offers from people wanting to take Lucy, the twins' mother, shopping.
"The community has taken a keen interest in the progress of the twins and we are very appreciative of that," Ross said adding that the hospital had received "lots of donations".
Ross said the girls would be well enough to return to Dar es Salaam by the end of the month.
The successful separation of the twins, who were joined at their hips with fused spinal cords, was the 34th operation on conjoined twins performed at the hospital since 1964. - Sapa
