Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic crash that claimed the lives of 13 schoolchildren in Vanderbijlpark on Friday morning.
The accident occurred at approximately 7am on Fred Droste Road, when a private scholar transport minibus collided with a side tipper truck.
Initial reports from emergency services indicated that 11 pupils were declared dead at the scene. One child later succumbed to injuries in hospital, and another death was confirmed later, raising the toll to 13. Three other pupils remain hospitalised with serious injuries.
The driver of the minibus was also injured and hospitalised. The condition and identity of the truck driver have not yet been confirmed.
Minister Gwarube extended her “heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the families, friends, classmates, and school communities of the learners who perished,” and wished strength and comfort to all affected by what she called a “devastating incident”.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane, who visited the scene alongside Premier Panyaza Lesufi, said: “This is a tragic day for the Department and the province. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and communities affected. We call for greater vigilance around scholar transport, especially private operators.”
The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that psychosocial support will be provided to affected learners, staff, and families, in collaboration with the Gauteng Education Department.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Gwarube also urged motorists to exercise “extreme caution” on the roads, especially during peak school transport hours.
