The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Buti Manamela, has welcomed the inauguration of Dr Naledi Pandor as Chancellor of Nelson Mandela University (NMU), describing the appointment as a significant moment for leadership and transformation in the higher education sector.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, he said the occasion went beyond formality and reflected the institution's commitment to knowledge and leadership.
"Today is not merely ceremonial. It is symbolic. It marks the convergence of leadership, legacy, and the enduring pursuit of knowledge that defines this institution," he said.
He congratulated Pandor on her appointment, praising her experience in government and her longstanding contribution to education policy and transformation.
Manamela said her career demonstrated intellectual depth and service, adding that she possessed the qualities required to guide the institution in a changing higher education landscape.
"The role of chancellor is not simply titular. It is profoundly influential. It calls for a custodian of vision, a champion of academic excellence, and an ambassador who carries the identity of the institution into the world," he said.
He also reflected on working with Pandor during her tenure as Minister of Higher Education and Training, describing her as a decisive leader committed to building systems and advancing transformation within the sector.
Manamela warned that universities face mounting pressure, including funding constraints and increasing demand for access, and urged stronger collaboration between institutions and the government.
"Our higher education sector stands at a critical juncture. We face constrained resources, rising demand for access, and the unfinished task of meaningful transformation," he said.
He added that universities must remain spaces for critical thinking and dialogue while producing graduates equipped to contribute to society.
He went on to say that her leadership would help guide conversations, strengthen partnerships, and inspire students and academics.
