Bev Frieslich, Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope, Fish Hoek
Following on the article published last week (“Time to get quacking for Rotary duck race,” Echo, November 7), for which we thank you, and the successful Duck Grand Prix event on Saturday November 9 in Glencairn, I would like to share a letter from Lady Cilla Bromley, who lives next door to where the duck races were held.
It was sent to the Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope directly after the very successful event, which made us feel very proud.
Thanks to the generous support of several local businesses, the duck race raised a substantial amount for our Rotary community work and also gave our first placed and fastest duck owner, a local young resident from Glencairn, the surprise of a generous R5 000 cash prize.
This is an example of true community spirit at work which benefited all concerned.
We shall certainly be back again and make it bigger and better. The letter reads as follows:
Good evening, Bev, I just want to thank you and your team for what looked like a superb event at Pooh Corner this morning.
From mine and Geese’s (Glencairn Education and Environmental Support Enthusiasts) point of view, we were just a little anxious about the geese family that call that area “home”.
Mother Goose has injured legs but has managed to rear her young (with the gander’s support). She rules the roost, and they all obey her.
However, all seven of them flew off in formation to breakfast with me this morning, and I told them to stay clear as you would be using the area – isn’t it beautiful?
I have to compliment you on your very thorough tidying up afterwards - I could find nothing. Thank you so much for being so thorough.
I’m afraid had to beat a hasty retreat as my schnauzer is very possessive of her territory and made a hellish noise.
I hope you made lots of money as it looked a very well attended event, and I was sorry not to stay and watch … if not participate. Next time.
All the best for your future endeavours - Cilla
