The results of Canada’s “wild election” are clear evidence that the citizens of that beautiful country did not allow the Conservatives’ fearmongering about the immigrants or the “broken country” narrative to cloud their judgment.

It was music to the ears of those of us praying for more stability, peace and cooperation around the world when Conservative candidate Pierre Poilievre – a firebrand loved by Elon Musk and US President Donald Trump – conceded defeat.

Former Bank of England governor Mark Carney gave the world a nice counterbalance to Trump and Musk’s wrecking-ball reign from just south of the border with Canada. And Carney is not just a banker but a wise, humble, experienced and knowledgeable leader who weathered the storms of Brexit and played a part in dealing with the number one crisis facing humanity – climate change.

Carney spoiled the Musk-Trump party as they began celebrating their first 100 days in office this week. Now, they better forget about annexing Canada or using “economic force” to make it their 51st state. They need to quickly learn to be good neighbours and respect the fence that separates the two mighty, sovereign G7 economies.

While the road ahead will be rocky for Carney with such next-door neighbours, it was a significant battle won for the progressives of this world.

Trump was the X-factor in these wild elections that have backfired on him and gave Carney a nice, fresh mandate. He kept huffing and puffing from across the border hoping Carney would shake and cave in. But it was only that Conservative loser that was scared of him – so scared he preferred not to talk about him during his campaign, costing him votes.

The lesson here for us watching from afar is that bullies like Trump need unshakeable, strong leaders like Carney who will look on tempests and never be shaken. If one is standing on the right side of history, no matter what the odds, the only thing to do is to fight the good fight.

We can all bank on this new prime minister with a fresh mandate to lead Canada well and not hand over its Maple leaf and the syrup to Musk, Trump & Co.
