Many social conflicts and deepening divisions that afflict our world today can be traced to humanity turning away from moral and spiritual principles. True moral maturity results from spiritual awareness, and the moral code that has the power to transform our actions originates from the guidance given to us by our Creator.
Our efforts to conform to the laws and teachings of God are the necessary consequence of our belief in Him. Otherwise, one would question what it means to have faith if it is not consciously manifested in one's actions, and in one’s relationships with others?
Bahá’u’lláh, the founder of the Bahá’í Faith, states: “It is incumbent upon every man of insight and understanding to strive to translate that which hath been written into reality and action”.
A moral person consciously and actively engages in performing actions that promote not only individual, but also social, transformation. Belief, after all, is not meant to remain a private sentiment or a comforting idea. It finds its true purpose when translated into action – the kind of action that contributes to both the well-being of the individual and of society.
The human heart is like a mirror, capable of reflecting spiritual qualities such as honesty and trustworthiness, love and compassion, justice and generosity. In the same way that a mirror needs to be cleansed from dust before it can reflect the rays of the sun, the mirror of our hearts needs to be cleansed from ego, from harmful desires and passions – such as envy, hatred, and malice – that hinder our spiritual development and growth.
Bahá’u’lláh states that the “betterment of the world can be accomplished through pure and goodly deeds, through commendable and seemly conduct”. He places emphasis on purity of intention and sincerity when one performs good deeds. That is when greatest results are achieved.
“One can hardly imagine what a great influence genuine love, truthfulness and purity of motives exert on the souls of men. But these traits cannot be acquired by any believer unless he makes a daily effort to gain them ...”, confirm the Bahá’í Writings.
A new set of moral standards, according to Bahá’í Writings, must lead to the unification of humanity and focus on the emergence of a world civilisation. It has to take into account that our well-being, peace, and security will depend on our unity as humanity.
A number of factors can contribute to the development of our spiritual qualities. Among them are prayer, reflection, a willingness to learn, and daily effort. Serving humanity is another factor that contributes greatly to our spiritual growth and development.
“That one indeed is a man who, today, dedicateth himself to the service of the entire human race. … Blessed and happy is he that ariseth to promote the best interests of the peoples and kindreds of the earth”, states Bahá’u’lláh.
The challenge before us, then, is not a lack of belief, but to live by it, with an unwavering commitment to individual and collective transformation.
