The Madlanga Commission has heard claims that alleged underworld figure Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala requested his bank card shortly before a purported meeting with Deputy President Paul Mashatile and suspended police deputy commissioner Lt-General Shadrack Sibiya, raising fresh questions about possible links between organised crime and senior officials.

Sergeant Fannie Nkosi told the commission he could not confirm whether the card was meant for Mashatile or for another purpose as reported by IOL.

The claim comes from a handwritten statement Nkosi gave police after his home was raided in October 2025.

At this stage, Nkosi did not confirm if indeed Matlala met Mashatile.

But Nkosi’s later typed statement to the commission omitted any mention of Mashatile.

Evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson pressed him, asking if he had been trying to protect the deputy president.

Nkosi denied this, saying it could have been a simple oversight.

The card in question, a “Luxor card,” was linked to withdrawals of R37,000 between 10 and 12 December 2024.

Nkosi said he had the card in his possession and had used it “three or four times” with Matlala’s permission to buy boat seats, covers, and service kits.

He could not explain who made the December withdrawals, denying any knowledge of the transactions.

Chaskalson suggested Nkosi himself was the likely person behind the cash movements, but Nkosi stood by his account.

The testimony raises fresh questions about the timing of Matlala’s request, the flow of funds, and the proximity of criminal influence to senior government figures.

With key details still unresolved, the commission proceedings are still underway.
