Music streaming platform Spotify has expanded its offering in South Africa with the launch of audiobooks, giving listeners a new way to enjoy stories while shining a light on local authors.

The audiobook catalogue features a wide range of bestsellers, new releases and genre favourites, including The Shining Girls by acclaimed South African author Lauren Beukes, alongside international titles such as Heated Rivalry,Fourth Wing and You and Me on Vacation.

Spotify said the launch is designed to fit seamlessly into modern lifestyles, allowing users to listen while commuting, exercising or winding down.

The platform highlighted that audiobooks also open new opportunities for creators, particularly local writers. By placing South African stories alongside global titles, Spotify aims to increase visibility for local authors and introduce their work to broader audiences.

From seasoned book lovers to those struggling to find time to read, audiobooks make it easier to fold storytelling into busy routines. Spotify remembers where listeners stop, allowing them to continue at their own pace without losing their place.

The launch also benefits publishers, offering a scalable digital distribution channel and new insights into audience engagement, while helping authors connect with listeners already active on the platform.

“This also supports creators across the ecosystem. For publishers, audiobooks offer a scalable distribution channel and new ways to understand how audiences are engaging with their titles. For authors, it can increase visibility in a space where millions already spend their time, helping turn casual listeners into loyal readers,” the platform said.

Spotify Audiobooks includes features such as Page Match, which allows users to switch between reading and listening by matching the audio to a physical book or e-book page. Premium Platinum users receive 12 hours of audiobook listening per month, with the option to top up when needed.

In highlighting local authors through its audiobook rollout, the platform positions South African storytelling within a global listening space, turning everyday moments into chapters and bringing readers and writers closer together through sound.
