Hungry Lions return to their pride lands aiming to regain top spot
Hungry Lions FC of Postmasburg returns to Windhoek Draught Park on Wednesday afternoon to face off against Pretoria University in a midweek fixture of the Motsepe Foundation Championship from where they hope to bounce back to the top of the log.
Hungry Lions, popularly also known as ‘Ditau di a Rora’ (The lions roar), return to the Diamond City hurting from their last outing to Magesi FC who had whipped them 2-1 at Polokwane’s old Peter Mokaba Stadium this past Sunday.
That loss in Polokwane against Magesi had toppled the Northern Cape side from the top spot of the log.

Before that game against Magesi FC, Hungry Lions had successfully worked their way upwards to the top tier of the Motsepe Foundation League. That was after they had convincingly dealt with Premier Soccer League relegatees Baroka FC whom they had beaten by a single goal scored by Owen Tau in the second half in the game held at Windhoek Draught Park.
About a week before that Hungry Lions enjoyed a more bountiful outing against Venda Football Academy who they beat 2-0 in what was the first of their two wins in Kimberley.
Hungry Lions dropped to second spot on the log after their third loss in the league after playing nine games. They were replaced by Polokwane City who leaped to the top of the log on the back of only two losses after nine games.
Hungry Lions PR handler Denzil Baitsomedi, responded to the observation that Windhoek Draught Park seems to be their happy hunting ground.
“There are always circumstances stacked against a team that is playing away,” Baitsomedi said. “Playing at home and in front of the home supporters stirs the boys up and motivates them. Our away run hasn't been as we would have liked it to be and it’s something we’ll be looking to correct.
“We are happy that we can collect maximum points at home as it bolsters our run for promotion to the DSTV premiership.”
Asked about the team’s plans for the upcoming match against University of Pretoria Baitsomedi replied, “The technical team is dedicated to making squad-related decisions that will produce a great performance that brings desirable results.
“The fans are fully behind the team and are more determined to rally behind the team. They are happy with the performance of the team.The team is determined to gain promotion to the DSTV championship next season and are equally ready to fight for the highest position in the league.
“Hungry Lions have every intention to get back to the top of the log and stay there,” he emphasised.
Hungry Lions have dropped the entrance fee for their matches in Kimberley to almost rock bottom at R30 per head for adults. The match on Wednesday starts at 3.30pm.
After the midweek clash against the Pretoria University, the next match in Kimberley for Hungry Lions will be on October 30, against Tshakhuma FC.
