Barebones MMA Championship continued its upward trajectory this weekend, rolling out an event that reiterated not only the growth of the promotion but also the endless potential and indirect positive impact this sport can have on the broader community.
In its most international event yet, BMC 7 delivered a card showcasing a handful of athletes from South Africa, the DRC, Nigeria, Cuba, and Namibia. Eighteen exhilarating fights enthralled and captivated fans, who arrived in good spirits and left pleasantly entertained, getting their money’s worth from an epic 18-fight card at the Sunningdale Sports Complex in Milnerton on Saturday, March 28.
The event not only crowned new champions and gave rise to new contenders, but also served as a nucleus for a special moment that highlighted how the MMA community can come together like never before. Gyms, families, and friends joined forces for a great cause initiated by social media personality Agisanang Pule, notoriously known as Agi The Kraken.
It was his brainchild to organise a charity run to assist the homeless in Cape Town after attending the inaugural EFC KNOX Legacy Series MMA event hosted at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World.
Back to the fights — there were a few to write home about, but the catchweight bout between Juan Conradie and Mandume Kaukunga was nothing short of spectacular. Kaukunga started the fight as the aggressor, taking it to the Cape Town athlete early. They secured a takedown and attempted to work magic from within Conradie’s guard. Commendably, Conradie showed fantastic composure off his back, constantly working and moving, and at one point even landing some solid ground-and-pound from the bottom.
Following a good scramble, the athletes got the fans on their feet, showcasing electric stand-up exchanges and beautiful footwork in efforts to evade each other’s attacks.
In round two, both athletes displayed sharp feints and footwork, mixed with crisp striking—including a flashy spinning back kick from Conradie. During the following exchange, Kaukunga made their intentions known again, attempting to unleash knees to Conradie’s midsection. Conradie, however, did well to turn defence into attack, eventually securing a takedown and asserting himself on the grappling front.
He executed a double-leg takedown and immediately established top control. Conradie sealed an emphatic victory with an anaconda choke, putting himself back in the win column after a previous loss to Reuben Job at BMC 5: Gauntlet.
The Fight of the Night was arguably the electrifying bantamweight title contendership bout between Umar Edwards and Damian Muller. The first—and only—round saw Muller charging forward with punches, driving Edwards against the cage. Edwards neutralized the onslaught by tying Muller up in a clinch while reversing position.
Despite Muller’s constant pressure, Edwards used his opponent’s momentum against him, executing a judo-style throw. Muller quickly got back to his feet but was met with a flush head kick from Edwards. Astonishingly, he immediately clinched again and engaged in close-range boxing.
Edwards capitalised by pressuring Muller toward the cage, where he secured a takedown and followed through with a rear-naked choke. The spectators erupted into frenzied cheers. Edwards made a statement with his swift victory, proving they are here to stay in the BMC promotion. He is expected to face current bantamweight champion Kiran Jeffrey in due course.
The co-main event saw Zander Cronje square off against Glody Miezi for the interim featherweight title. In the opening round, both fighters traded strikes evenly. Cronje utilised a jab–right hook combination to set up a takedown. Miezi briefly threatened with a standing guillotine choke, but Cronje’s composure shone through.
He advanced to full mount before transitioning to side control, where he attempted an Americana submission. Although unsuccessful, Cronje maintained dominant top pressure. His patience paid off as he took Miezi’s back and secured a rear-naked choke victory.
The main event featured a heavyweight title clash between DRC’s Herve Zeng and Nigeria’s Aku Okafar. Zeng proved too evasive on the night, showcasing superior conditioning, lighter footwork, and sharper technical nuances. His movement and control ultimately earned him a unanimous decision victory, crowning him the new BMC Heavyweight Champion.
