SPRINGBOKS

Elrigh Louw made a strong return from injury for the Bulls recently and should definitely be back in Springboks contention this year.

The Springboks have always relied heavily on their No 7 bruiser when it comes to softening up the opposition in a Test match.

This is arguably the hardest-working role amongst the forwards when it comes to defence and attack, as well as another lineout option. Pieter-Steph du Toit has been a mainstay for South Africa; however, it is time for the Boks to look for his permanent replacement beyond the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

We look at key players who’ve made a case for themselves to step into that flanker jersey during this year’s 13 matches.

Elrigh Louw (Bulls)

He recently returned from a serious injury, but in a couple of matches already reminded opposition teams of what he is capable of. Louw missed a chunk of the 2025 season with a knee injury and saw a few players jump ahead of him. But that hunger was channelled into some strong performances for the Bulls in his comeback that he will look to kick on from.

Ben-Jason Dixon (Stormers)

He fell out of favour after his debut, but last season’s surprise recall to the Springboks’ squad lit the fire in him again. Dixon is a versatile loose forward, much in the mould of Du Toit and can fulfil the role of bruiser without fuss. After recovering from an injury, he has been outstanding for the Stormers this season, looking to impress the Bok coaches even more.

Ruan Venter (Lions)

After his time in the international desert affected his game at the Lions, the bruiser has discovered the form that first made him a Springbok. The Sharks, Stormers and Lions can attest to that. His carry metres over the gain line are immense, and his tackling is outstanding. Venter also added some soft touches to his game, especially when it comes to offloads.

Vincent Tshituka (Sharks)

The utility forward burst onto the Bok scene last year and announced himself with a strong debut to the world. However, the competitiveness in the No 7 jersey has made opportunities scarce. Despite that, Tshituka have been emptying his tank on the attack and defence for the Sharks and should be close to a Bok recall this year.

Pieter-Steph du Toit (Toyota Verblitz)

Although the Springbok legend underwent surgery recently, and after being deregistered by his Japanese club, he will be available for the world champions once the season starts in July. Du Toit will be a vital player against England in the Nations Championship and the All Blacks during the Greatest Rivalry tour. However, he could be set for an extended, deserved break.
