The Bulls have been dealt a significant blow ahead of the off-season, with Springbok lock Ruan Nortjé set to leave Loftus Versfeld at the end of the campaign for a move to Japan.

Nortjé (27) has been a stalwart for the Bulls and a central figure during Jake White’s tenure. He played a key role in guiding the side to three United Rugby Championship (URC) finals and was equally influential in their Champions Cup campaigns.

Although he recently relinquished the captaincy to fellow veteran Marcell Coetzee, Nortjé has remained a vital presence within the squad.

Over nearly a decade, he has amassed 146 appearances for the Bulls and is on course to reach the 150 mark should he feature in the remaining four URC league fixtures. His dominance at the lineout, defensive physicality, leadership, and relentless work ethic place him firmly among the greats to have worn the Loftus jersey.

Nortjé captained the side on 37 occasions.

Speaking from France, where the team is preparing for next weekend’s URC clash against the Dragons in Wales, Nortjé admitted it was difficult to fully express his emotions.

“For me, it was a little boy’s dream come true to represent the Bulls. I would have been happy with just one appearance and never imagined in my wildest dreams that I’d get close to 150 matches.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate, especially to have avoided serious injuries. I want to thank everyone who played a part in my journey. I’ve worked with some amazing people and built friendships that will last a lifetime.

“It’s a very emotional decision, but ultimately it comes down to my wife and family — they are my top priority.”

Head coach Johan Ackermann revealed he has been in discussions with Nortjé and Blue Bulls Company CEO Edgar Rathbone regarding the move since his arrival at Loftus earlier this season.

Ackermann expressed full support for the decision.

“He has given nearly 10 years of his career to the Bulls and has been the heart and soul of this team. Sometimes, as a player, a new chapter is the right step. He also has a young family to consider, and this presents an opportunity to experience something different.

“He has earned his place among the icons of this jersey, not just through his performances, but through the way he carries himself.

“It was an easy decision to support him and his wife, Linda. I’m grateful for the time we’ve worked together — particularly for his leadership and the quality of person he is. Hopefully, we can finish the season strongly and send him off on the right note.”
