Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan doubts that Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane can make an impact at the club after joining on a free transfer from Orlando Pirates.
Kaizer Chiefs are in the midst of a squad rebuild and jumped at the opportunity to sign two players from their local rivals.
The duo were released at the end of last season after being deemed surplus to requirements, which is what Khan has an issue with.
“If they were the calibre that could make an impact, why did Pirates let them go?” Khan said, as quoted by FARPost.
“When you are trying to build, you need to go get young players who can grow into the system. I think many teams try to save by not spending on transfers, but that has a bad impact in the long run.
“Take nothing away from the two players – they are very good players – but can they improve the current Kaizer Chiefs squad?
“I think they’re good players, but can they take the club to the next level? I’ll have to wait and see. At Chiefs, you need players who can take the level of your squad higher.”
As they prepare for next season, which will also see them return to continental competition after winning the Nedbank Cup, the Chiefs squad have returned to Naturena for pre-season training. On July 3, they will embark on a week-long training camp in the Netherlands, where they will play Eredivisie side FC Utrecht.
The 2025/26 season will kick off with head coach Nasreddine Nabi under pressure to prove he is the right man for the job. After a decent start to his first Betway Premiership campaign, the club hit a dip in form that saw them finish outside of the top 8 for a second season in a row.
