With a blockbuster clash against Mamelodi Sundowns looming, Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has sounded the alarm over his team’s troubling inability to convert scoring opportunities.
Despite this past Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in Soweto, Ouaddou took a candid approach, labelling the team’s scoring difficulties a “sickness.” His comments underscore a deeper concern lurking in the shadows of victory.
“We should have scored more goals. It’s important to be clear; our attacking efficiency has been lacking,” Ouaddou stated emphatically.
The admission signals a pressing need for improvement as Pirates prepare to face a formidable Sundowns side renowned for their defensive prowess on Wednesday (kick-off 7.30pm).
While the match against Gallants offered glimpses of potential, it also laid bare ongoing challenges with accuracy and creativity in the final third. Key players, who had shown promise in past fixtures, struggled to find their rhythm, contributing to a disheartening tally of missed opportunities.
The Ghost, accustomed to an attacking brand of football, will likely resonate with Ouaddou’s concerns. The ambition to capture silverware this season relies on more than just securing wins; it hinges on converting chances into goals.
“What I’m looking for is consistency in every game, especially in scoring goals and maintaining control in the middle,” Ouaddou affirmed.
“I urge my players to be more ambitious and efficient in the final third and to have more control in the middle, because football is won there. If we don’t have control in the middle, it can be difficult.”
Pirates, who currently lead the Betway Premiership title race, with Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs in hot pursuit, face the challenge of not only maintaining their winning momentum but also sharpening their teeth in front of goal.
With consistency being the primary focus, Ouaddou knows his work is cut out for him as the season intensifies. The immediate focus shifts to the training ground as the team looks to sharpen their clinical edge. For a side aiming to secure its place at the summit of South African football, this blend of tactical refinement and increased confidence will be integral.
