Former Orlando Pirates legend Edward Motale has backed his former side to rise to the occasion when they lock horns with reigning league champions Mamelodi Sundowns in a high-stakes Betway Premiership blockbuster at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night (7.30pm kickoff).

Pirates head into the encounter brimming with renewed belief as they chase their first league crown in nearly 14 years. Standing in their way is a Sundowns side determined to extend a remarkable era of dominance, with the Brazilians pursuing what would be a ninth successive league title.

The fixture not only pits the top two teams against each other but could also influence the psychological direction of the title race.

Pirates have laid a solid foundation in the early stages of the campaign. After seasons where promise faded at crucial moments, they have displayed improved consistency and maturity.

Their efforts have earned them a six-point lead at the summit — an advantage that brings both comfort and responsibility. Victory on Wednesday would stretch that gap to nine points and heap significant pressure on the defending champions.

Last season, the two heavyweights traded home victories before Sundowns ultimately ended Pirates’ title ambitions in the closing stages. This time, however, there appears to be a different edge to the Soweto giants. They look more structured, composed and resilient in decisive moments.

Motale, a Champions League winner with the club during his playing days, has been impressed by the progress made and believes the Pirates enter the clash as slight favourites.

“Orlando Pirates have the upper hand heading into this match because they are currently number one on the log and are playing very good and entertaining football at the moment,” Motale told Independent Newspapers.

“There have been a lot of improvements, and I am quite happy with the strides they have made from last season.

“A win for Pirates will obviously see them move nine points clear of Sundowns, but that will not mean the league is won because there is still a long way to go. However, a good result for Pirates will add a lot of pressure, as Sundowns will need to play catch-up in between their busy schedule.

Despite recent scrutiny of Sundowns’ performances and reports of supporter frustration, Motale dismissed suggestions that the champions are in decline. In his view, the gap between the sides remains narrow and complacency would be dangerous.

“I have not bought into the trend that Mamelodi Sundowns have issues this season. I am yet to see that. All that is important is for Pirates to focus on themselves and their own game, go to FNB Stadium and beat Sundowns.

“The two teams are very balanced. I cannot even single out any players from both teams. Any player on the night can have a telling impact, but teamwork always stands out.”

While the result could significantly shift momentum, Motale does not believe it will decisively determine the destination of the trophy.

“I do not think that the match will be that much of a decider of who will win the league; however, it will play a huge role in strengthening the position of whoever wins.

“Pirates don’t need to put pressure on themselves. There is obviously the derby coming up soon after, and good results in the two matches will be key. This match will be the ideal preparation for the derby.”
