Five learners have been arrested for allegedly torching two classrooms at Thuto-Lefa Secondary in Munsieville.

According to Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona, a fire erupted on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 6, destroying two mobile classrooms.

“It is alleged that the incident may be linked to learner dissatisfaction with recent timetable changes introduced by the school.”

Mabona expressed deep concern that opposition to academic planning was voiced through such a destructive and harmful act.

He added that the adjustments were aimed at ensuring the completion of the academic syllabus and providing sufficient revision time ahead of the upcoming preliminary examinations.

Mabena further stated that the police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which resulted in the arrest of five learners: four from Grade 10 and one from Grade 9.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane strongly condemned the incident, emphasising that setting fire to a classroom cannot be considered a legitimate form of protest but is instead a criminal act.

“Burning a classroom is not a form of protest; it is a criminal act that robs learners of their right to quality education. We will not tolerate such destructive behaviour, and those responsible must face the full consequences of the law,” said Chiloane.

The Department stated that it will collaborate with the school and other stakeholders to minimise disruption to learning. Officials will evaluate the extent of the damage and take prompt action, which may include providing temporary structures to support ongoing education.

“The Department will not hesitate to act decisively in defence of the schooling environment. We urge learners, communities, parents, and learners to work together with school leadership and authorities to preserve the integrity of our schools,” Chiloane added.

In a video posted on X, learners can be seen covering their noses as thick smoke billows from the burning classrooms, while others record the unfolding incident on their phones.
