Actress and social media star Tebogo Thobejane said dating has become difficult because men are reluctant to approach her because they don't know how to handle her public life.
The former Muvhango actress revealed on Instagram Live that men are now hesitant to approach her, allegedly fearing her ex-boyfriend Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, who has been linked to an alleged assassination attempt against her.
Thobejane revealed that the alleged shooting has cast a long shadow over her personal life, making men hesitant to approach her. She reflected candidly on the situation, saying that, contrary to appearances, men are not always as brave as they seem when it comes to stepping into potentially dangerous or complicated circumstances.
“Let me tell you something about men. You think that men are brave. Men are not brave. There’s no man that’s gonna come and say, ‘Yah, come, I’m gonna date you. Don’t worry, baby, I’m gonna take care of you because someone wants to shoot you.’”
She also reflected on how the incident has overshadowed her presence in social spaces.
“You walk into a room, there’s a bunch of men who any other day, if it wasn’t for this shooting, any of them would have taken me, married me, dated me, made me go around the world. But now, when they see it’s all over Google: she’s been shot, this, this, she’s a snitch, she’s this,” she said.
Thobejane also pointed out the irony surrounding the men in her life, noting that many are affluent politicians or businessmen who may have engaged in questionable actions, but likely have not crossed the line into extreme violence.
In late 2023, Thobejane and a friend were ambushed on the N1 highway near Sandton. Their car came under fire, leaving Thobejane with a gunshot wound to the foot and her friend with a spinal cord injury.
In September, the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court heard that Thobejane had left the country, fearing for her life, with her current whereabouts unknown. This revelation came during the continuation of Matlala’s bail application. Matlala faces charges alongside four co-accused, including his wife, Tsakani Matlala, who is currently out on bail, all implicated in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, through his legal team, Matlala denied any motive to target his former partner, maintaining that their relationship was consensual and lasted about 13 months.
Matlala is facing serious charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering, with authorities opposing his bail due to concerns that he poses a significant flight risk.
He has also allegedly been linked to state corruption, accused of meddling in multimillion-rand contracts, financing ANC political activities, and evidence has been given to both the Madlanga Commission and a parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee probing criminal-justice corruption.
