One of Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero's predecessors, Al Jama-ah Councillor Kabelo Gwamanda, has withdrawn the no-confidence motion against him.
Gwamanda filed the motion of confidence last month, following a schism between the ANC and minority parties in the Local Unity Government.
“I would like to take an approach and indicate and register with the council that an approach was adopted, and I am grateful for the fact that the executive mayor felt it important to take it upon himself to engage the affected parties, who then took a decision,” he said.
Gwamanda added: “We would like to thank the Patriotic Alliance, the African Transformation Movement (ATM), as well as the APC (African People’s Convention) because those political parties assisted us in resolving, as the political management committee, to ultimately withdraw this particular motion.”
In exchange for the withdrawal of the motion against Morero, the ANC also withdrew motions of no confidence against the Health and Social Development Section 79 Oversight Committee and former mayor Thapelo Amad, also an Al Jama-ah councillor.
In addition, the motion against the chairperson of the Section 79 Oversight Committee on Governance and ATM councillor, Lubabalo Magwentshu, was also withdrawn.
UDM councillor and Gender, Youth and People with Disabilities Committee Chairperson Yongama Zigebe also survived a motion of no confidence tabled against him.
After the motion against Morero was withdrawn, ANC councillors told their partners that they had forgiven them but had not forgotten.
They also stated that they were not withdrawing the motion because the ANC does not have the numbers in council.
Morero is expected to square off against the city’s Finance MMC and ANC Regional Deputy Secretary Loyiso Masuku for his position as ANC Johannesburg regional chairperson at the three-day regional conference, which starts tomorrow at the Cedarwoods Hotel.
