A Mpumalanga woman, Nonhlanhla Portia Nkosi (30), has been sentenced to 57 years in prison for the brutal murder of Sifiso Lucky Kubheka, whose body was discovered in the Roodebank River with his hands bound in cable ties and his legs tied to a rock.

Nkosi was also convicted for the kidnapping and assault of another victim, highlighting the heinous nature of her crimes.

The sentence was handed down by the Evander Magistrate’s Court following a thorough investigation into the disappearance of Khubeka, who was reported missing on 21 April 2024.

Provincial spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe said police investigations uncovered a criminal syndicate involved in kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, intimidation, cybercrime, and robbery-related offences.

“Nkosi has been sentenced to 57 years’ imprisonment for her role in the murder of Sifiso Lucky Kubheka, as well as the kidnapping and assault of another victim whose identity is protected,” Nonyane-Mpe said.

Nkosi pleaded guilty to a series of serious charges, including kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, contraventions of the Cybercrimes Act, cyber fraud, robbery with aggravating circumstances, intimidation, and murder.

“As part of the court proceedings, Nkosi admitted guilt to all counts, demonstrating the gravity and breadth of her criminal actions,” Nonyane-Mpe added.

The co-accused, Mandla Skosana, Sibusiso Skosana, and Seun Mpenzi, pleaded not guilty and will continue to face trial.

Nonyane-Mpe also revealed that the police investigation team worked tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice. Khubeka’s body was later found in the Roodebank River, with his hands bound with cable ties and his legs tied to a rock.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the police detectives, prosecution team, and judiciary for their efforts.

“We are pleased with the successful outcome of this case and the efforts of our members. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who break the law are brought to book,” Mkhwanazi said.
