What should have been a joyful start to the new year ended in tragedy when a family dispute turned deadly, leaving a 43-year-old man fatally stabbed and his 60-year-old father facing a murder charge in Limpopo.

The incident unfolded on January 1 following a heated argument between the deceased and his mother, according to Limpopo provincial police spokesperson Colonel Maselela Ledwaba.

“It is alleged that the deceased had an argument with his mother and in the process allegedly threatened to kill his father. His mother apparently contacted her husband who was not around to inform him that his son was coming to kill him,” Ledwaba said.

Police said the 43-year-old later went to his father’s home, where a confrontation broke out shortly after his arrival.

“The 43-year-old allegedly took out a sharp object, and his father apparently managed to overpower him, grabbed it, and stabbed him in the upper body. The son died on the scene,” Ledwaba added.

Emergency services were called to the scene, but the victim was declared dead on arrival. Police have since opened a case of murder against the 60-year-old suspect.

While the exact motive behind the incident remains unclear, police have not ruled out domestic violence as a contributing factor. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation are ongoing.

Ledwaba confirmed that the suspect is expected to appear before the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court on Monday, January 5, where he will face a charge of murder.
