“My matric year was an interesting journey that taught me a lot of things,” said 18-year-old Isabel Keebine, whose year was marked by perseverance, faith, and determination.
Isabel’s biggest highlights came through academic recognition. “In my matric year, I was recognised as one of the top students not only once but twice,” she said, describing moments that affirmed her hard work and resilience.
Behind her achievements were severe challenges. Isabel completed matric without electricity at home, relying on school facilities and neighbours for support.
“I used to charge my phone and laptop at school or at my neighbours’ houses, who supported me through this journey, and I studied using my phone torch,” she said.
The financial and emotional strain was heavy, especially when completing assignments online. “That was probably the hardest thing I had to go through.”
One of the most frightening moments of her year occurred during prelims.
“I remember the day I was supposed to write Business Studies Paper 2… the taxi that I was in got hit by another taxi exactly where I was sitting,” she recalled. Although unharmed, the shock affected her performance. “Mentally, I was spiralling.”
Looking ahead, Isabel plans to study Law at the University of Cape Town, with dreams of reaching the highest level in the profession.
Her advice to the Class of 2026 was grounded in faith and perspective: “Buckle up, you have an interesting journey ahead of you. Always lean on God and remember that your grades don’t define you.”
