A cache of explosives and dye-stained banknotes has led to the arrest of two men linked to a brazen ATM bombing, in what police describe as a breakthrough in ongoing investigations.

The suspects, aged 26 and 38, were arrested on Wednesday following an intelligence-driven operation led by a multi-disciplinary team, including Crime Intelligence Narcotics, the Sedibeng Tactical Response Team (TRT), JMPD K9 unit, and private security partners under the Eyes and Ears Initiative.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the operation stemmed from information linking one of the suspects to an ATM bombing that took place in Kliprivier in February.

“The team followed up information on a suspect connected to an ATM bombing that occurred at Kliprivier in February.”

She added that officers tracked the suspect to Orlando East, where he was found in possession of dye-stained cash.

Further investigations led officers to a second suspect in Diepkloof, Zone 4, where explosives were found.

Both men are now facing charges of possession of explosives and suspected stolen money and are expected to be formally linked to the Kliprivier ATM bombing case when they appear in the Orlando Magistrate’s Court soon.

Nevhuhulwi commended the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies and private security in securing the arrests.

“The team is commended for their collaborative efforts with other law enforcement agencies,” she said, adding that the public should continue to play an active role in fighting crime.

Authorities have urged residents to report criminal activity through the Crime Stop hotline or anonymously via the MySAPS app as investigations continue.
