Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have uncovered several RDP houses allegedly being illegally rented out to undocumented foreign nationals after drone surveillance was used during a government crackdown.
The discoveries were made during Operation Nenzani LaEzweni in Mount Moriah, where investigators attached to the Department of Human Settlements’ elite unit traced individuals believed to be Malawian and Zimbabwean nationals to a number of RDP homes after they allegedly attempted to evade authorities.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said the operation had exposed what appears to be a growing network of corruption and illegal occupation involving government-subsidised housing.
“The utilisation of drone technology during the execution of Operation Nenzani LaEzweni has led to the identification of several RDP houses in Mount Moriah that are allegedly being illegally leased to undocumented foreign nationals.”
The investigation has since widened as authorities move to dismantle syndicates allegedly involved in the unlawful sale and rental of RDP houses.
“A further investigation has since been launched to systematically root out all rogue elements operating within these RDP houses,” Duma said.
The department also revealed that some of the identified properties were allegedly being used for criminal activities, including drug trafficking, human trafficking and as hideouts for hitmen.
“As previously stated, the sale or leasing of an RDP house is illegal and constitutes a violation of government housing policy,” he added.
Authorities said investigations and administrative processes were continuing before action was taken against implicated beneficiaries and properties linked to the operation.
“Upon completion of all necessary investigations and administrative processes by the Head of Department, Mr Max Mbili, and his investigative team, a major announcement will be made regarding the future of the affected properties and the implicated beneficiaries.”
Duma also praised community members who assisted authorities by providing information during the operation.
“The Department also acknowledges and appreciates the role played by community members who continue to provide valuable information,” he said.
Operation Nenzani LaEzweni is being carried out with support from Phoenix SAPS, KwaMashu SAPS and other police units under the leadership of KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
