As we approach our first Christmas under a Government of National Unity (GNU), South Africans find themselves at a crossroads. The festive season, traditionally a time of joy, reflection, and hope, is overshadowed by the stark reality of persistent poverty that continues to plague our nation. While the GNU was heralded as a beacon of hope for a more inclusive and equitable South Africa, the situation on the ground tells a different story.
The challenges we face are not just economic; they are deeply intertwined with social, political, and historical factors that require urgent attention and action.
The GNU was formed in the wake of a tumultuous period marked by political instability, political compromise, and social unrest. Many South Africans placed their hopes in this coalition, believing it would usher in a new era of collaboration and progress. However, as we approach the festive season, it is evident that the GNU has struggled to address the systemic issues that have left millions of South Africans in dire poverty.
