A family caused chaos at Capitec Bank in Stanger this week when they took a deceased relative to allegedly claim a funeral policy - leading to a dramatic scene and temporary closure of the branch.

Nikesh Hooblall, the owner of Taurus Medical and Security, said he received a group WhatsApp message about a body left in the bank this morning.

"When I arrived, there was a lot of commotion. The family stood outside talking to officials, while security cordoned off the bank. The deceased was in a body bag on the floor inside the bank. It seemed there was a dispute over a funeral policy," Hooblall told the Post publication.

He said a large crowd, including other staff members and customers, had gathered to watch the scene unfold.

According to a report on AdzVantage Stanger, the family had to provide proof of death and allegedly returned with the body.

Seressa Govender, a social media user, posted: "All they cud have done was take a death certificate to prove the death."

Charmain Barnard added: "Probably dragging their heels regarding payout/requesting additional unnecessary documents."

Rumpy Harry wrote: "Yes that is the way to make sure that the deceased is really dead."
